Cumberland Kiwanis
Minutes of January 4, 2010
Speaker: B. J. Brenna
Topic: Cumberland Memorial Hospital Smart Fit
Program

B. J. opened with reference
to the time of the year when many people make New YearÕs resolutions, such as
to loose weight. He followed with
an invitation to consider the new Smart Fit program beginning January 13 at
6:00 pm in the Cumberland High School.
The class will focus on the five things that everyone should know about
keeping fit.
A starting point is attention
to stabilization and body strength (control). To illustrate, B. J. had the Kiwanians do an exercise with
knee bends and pelvis tipping.
Weight loss was the next
topic. Exercise can help, but it
is important to change oneÕs metabolism by building more muscle mass. Most effective is Òsprint interval
training,Ó involving 15 minutes of short (30-50 second) intensive exercise to
raise the heart rate. Target heart
rates are self-limiting, so there is no danger of over-doing it.
When exercising, one should
stop before it hurts and allow the body to recover from soreness before
continuing. Weight lifting is one
way of building muscle mass and control.
Exercising with sprint
intervals fifteen minutes a day for six weeks has been shown to increase at
rest fat burning by 12%.
