Speaker: Major League Umpire Tim Tschida
Topic: Issues in Professional Baseball Today

Tim Tschida
Cumberland native Tim Tschida
shared his observations on professional baseball from the perspective of a
major league umpire. He began by
addressing the problem of dealing with mistaken calls, which are to some degree
unavoidable at times. When it does
(even rarely) happen, it makes for a difficult press conference. But games are not predictable, so things
happen. When they do, he has to
deal with fan anger, even to the extent of using an Òassumed nameÓ for his
hotel stay.
In response to a question
regarding the possibility of instant replay reviews, Tim is both for and
against. He also explained the
rules on fan interference.
In response to a question
about possible measures to speed up baseball games, he noted that although
there is no clock, players who delay the game can be fined. (He suggested sending the fine letter
to the playerÕs wife!!)
In response to concerns about
the length of the playoffs, Tim cited the role money plays in scheduling. The networks have a major voice in
deciding when games can be played.
Money is also a big factor in team headquarters with too many VPs.
Tim spoke highly of the new
Twins stadium, noting excellent design and location. He was called on to help with the layout and was able to
bring about a more favorable location of the weather radar facility. He feels that a roof is not needed and
noted the problems the Brewers are having with their stadium roof.
