Tim Heffernan
Speakers: Tim Heffernan and Library Director Lori
Bock
Topic: Library Events and the Restoration of
an Historic Wall Clock
Ms. Bock opened with an overview
of upcoming events at the Cumberland Library, with special emphasis on the
Sunday (Sundae) Afternoon programs.
Tim then presented a commentary on a historical clock, recently
restored, which now hangs in the library.
The clock bears the inscription of ÒClass of 1914,Ó indicating that it
was donated to the Cumberland High School by that class. Over the years, the clock was
eventually sold to a private individual, who recently donated it to the
library.
To bring us back to the time
of 1914, Tim listed a number of historical events of that year. The list included such things as the
first scheduled airline passenger flight, and the founding of companies such as
Merrill-Lynch, Greyhound and Carrier air conditioning. You could buy a cord of maple firewood
for $3.50 and beef cost 8-10 cents per pound.
Although none of the 17
graduates of 1914 are living today, of course, Tim cited several who had become
prominent persons in Cumberland in their adult lives.
