Cumberland Kiwanis
Minutes of November 9, 2009
Speaker: Carl Bents, Mayor of Cumberland
Topic: Update on Civic Matter in Cumberland
Mayor Bents began by
complementing Kiwanis on the many efforts to contribute to the town and
especially to youth programs.
He then cited a number of new
improvements to the community, such as:
the library addition, the Library Lake project, and the new water tower
which will be built. He noted that
visitors express very positive views on the appearance of the town.
However, there is a pressing
need for a new city hall and police station. The new building will cost between 1.7 and 2 million. Money can be obtained now at a low
interest rate of 3%. The main
hurdle is deciding where to locate.
Mayor Bents expressed his preference for locating on Main Street, at a
location which would replace three run-down structures. A final decision will be made by the
council. Because of DOT objections
to the present building, that must happen soon. Mr. Bents is offering use of one of his buildings as an
interim location.
