Topic: New Cumberland Food Distribution
Program

The national Food
Distribution Program collects food from stores that is in good condition but
cannot be sold for a variety of reasons, such as impending expiration date,
wrong weight, etc. The program
will open in February 2010 with distribution once a month on the first Saturday
of the month, beginning at 8:00 am at the Elementary School. A donation of $15 is asked of
recipients, who will then receive about $150 worth of food.
The program has already been
running about 10 years in Spooner and Shell Lake. To carry out the distribution, 40 to 50 volunteers are
needed. Organizations such as Kiwanis
are invited to sponsor a month.
In the past, the
Spooner/Shell Lake programs relied on independent truckers to obtain and
deliver the food. Problems arose
when the food did not match needs or exceeded the amounts that could be
used. This was solved by
cooperating with the RubyÕs Pantry program in North Branch, which collects food
and distributes it to local programs.
Kiwanians are asked to help
publicize the program. Up to 200
families can be served on a first-come basis. The first Cumberland distribution will take place on
February 6, 2010.
